Water usage is likely one of the top expenses in your restaurant. You must pay to bring it in, heat it, and remove it. To avoid sky-high utility bills, start by making sure your restaurant plumbing system is always working as well as it should. Here are a few ways to keep everything running smoothly.

Faucets

Sink faucets can be a sneaky way to drive your water bill up. With such a large facility and the amount of water you use, a small drip can end up costing you a lot. Make a schedule to check around the sinks and pipes for any signs of leaking and get it fixed as soon as you can. This is a much cheaper option than having to shut down the restaurant and call an emergency plumbing service!

Another option is to install low-flow aerators at each sink. A standard aerator uses 2.2 gallons of water per minute, while a low-flow version uses just 0.5 gallons. This can save you $100 per year per sink!

Water Brooms

The floor of the kitchen and bathrooms can get dirty quickly. Most restaurants will use a standard garden hose and squeegee to keep them clean. A better option is to use a water broom. Not only are they faster and more efficient, but they also use a minimal 2 gallons of water compared to the 7 gallons used with a hose. A wide spray arm and multiple jets help you manage the use of water.

Water Filtering Systems

The amount of water you use isn’t your only concern. You also need to ensure it’s free of contaminants. If there is a lot of chloramine in your water, it can damage your restaurant plumbing system and deteriorate any stainless steel you have. A whole water filtering system keeps your water (and equipment!) safe.

Drain Tempering Kits

Before entering the municipal sewer system, any hot water must first be cooled down. When you use dishwashers and other sources of hot water, the used water must pass through a drain tempering kit before entering the sewer system. If you use copper pipes for the drain tempering system they won’t melt or warp the way plastic pipes would over time.

Grease Traps

Grease traps are typically the most common issue for restaurant plumbing. This must remain running smoothly because if it malfunctions, you may have to shut down and call for a clogged drain plumber. The usual solution is to hydro-jet from the outside in. Although county inspectors establish requirements for timing, many restaurant owners try to save some money by stretching out the dates between cleanings. When they wait too long for service, the traps get full and overflow, which leads to clogs.
